Section 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill Procedures Spills may be picked up with scoop and absorbent materials, and then transferred to containers. Wear protective clothing and gear during cleanup.
Containment Techniques This is a solid material and will not travel far from the spill location unless mechanically agitated. Therefore, no specific containment techniques are recommended outside of restricting access to the spill location. During spill cleanup, residual wash waters should be contained and collected for proper disposal.
Spill Response Equipment The following equipment is recommended for spill response:
• dustpan, shovel or scoop
• bags, drums or sacks for collection
Personal Protective Equipment Employees should utilize the following protective equipment when performing spill response activities:
• gloves (rubber or leather)
• cotton coveralls
• Safety goggles
• respiratory equipment recommended in Section 8
Section 7: Handling and Storage
Handling Measures should be taken to minimize and protect against airborne dust during cleanup operations, including use of respiratory protective equipment if necessary.
Storage Store in closed containers in a dry place separate from incompatible materials.
Disposal From a waste perspective, this product is not considered hazardous and may be disposed of as solid waste in accordance with applicable federal, state, provincial, and local regulations.
Section 8: Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Engineering Controls Administrative and/or engineering control methods such as, but not limited to, process enclosure and exhaust ventilation may be necessary to control exposures to dust and/or gaseous organic compounds released at elevated temperatures. Supply sufficient replacement air to make up for air removed by exhaust systems. Selection of all personal protective equipment should be performed by an Industrial Hygienist or other qualified professional.
Respiratory Protection If engineering controls and work practices are not effective in controlling exposures, appropriate personal protective equipment including a NIOSH/OSHA approved respirator should be worn.
Skin Protection When repeated or prolonged contact with hands is likely, appropriate gloves should be used.
Eye/Face Protection Appropriate eye protection should be worn. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Work Hygiene Practices • Do not eat, drink, smoke, or perform other hand-to-mouth activities in product use or handling area.
• Wash thoroughly after handling this product.

Hazardous Decomposition Products Thermal decomposition of limestone beginning at 550°C (1022°F) can produce calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Heating of this product above 244°C (471°F) may cause volatilization and/or thermal decomposition of processing aids, resulting in the gaseous release of trace amounts of organic compounds.
Incompatibilities
(Materials to Avoid)
Reacts with acids to liberate carbon dioxide. Ignites on contact with fluorine. Also incompatible with alum and ammonium salts.
Conditions to Avoid Incompatible materials and excessive temperatures.
Section 11: Toxicological Information
Occupationally Relevant Routes of Exposure
Inhalation Dust may irritate the respiratory tract. Symptoms include sneezing and slight nose irritation.
Ingestion Ingestion of very large quantities may result in intestinal obstruction and/or constipation.
Skin Repeated or prolonged exposure may have a drying effect on the skin, and may also cause irritation.
Eye Irritation. Symptoms include watering and irritation.
Effects and Hazards
of Chronic Exposure
Chronic exposure to limestone dust at concentrations exceeding occupational exposure limits may cause pneumoconiosis (lung disease). This product contains crystalline silica (quartz) as an impurity. Chronic exposure to crystalline silica dust at concentrations exceeding occupational exposure limits may cause silicosis. The NTP’s Ninth Report on Carcinogens lists crystalline silica (respirable size) as a known human carcinogen. IARC concluded that there is sufficient evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of inhaled (respirable) crystalline silica.
Section 12: Ecological Information
Limestone has been known since ancient times. It occurs widely in the earth's crust and can be dissolved from rocks and minerals into surface waters. Limestone and chalk have a variety of commercial and industrial uses, such as paint pigments, paper, building materials and plastics.
Acute (short-term)
Ecological Effects
No information available.
Chronic (long-term)
Ecological Effects
No information available.
Section 13: Disposal Considerations
Empty Containers From a waste perspective, this product is not considered hazardous. This product may be shipped in plastic or paper bags and plastic or steel pails. All residual material should be emptied and the containers must be disposed of in accordance with dederal (country-specific), state, and local regulations.
Section 14: Transportation Information
Not regulated.
Section 15: Regulatory Information
