I have several questions on the Kolner clays.First, should the clays be heated in a double boiler just like the traditional hide/clays?Next,can they be sprayed on?Will they stick to a couple of coats of sanding primer or would shellsc be better or no need for either? What is the best material to sand them with?(tack or sand paper)I have the colnasize and read its directions. You'd think the manufacturers would have put directions on their product(not colnasize)!!!HELP ANYONE,Thank you

The Kolner burnishing system contains an acrylic dispersion binder, so it does not need to be treated in the same manner as animal skin glue. We have not tested it for application by spray gun, but it can be diluted with water to some degree so it may be applied by spray. It will adhere to sanding primer, but it usually is applied to a chalk or gesso coating. The directions for Colnasize and the Kolner Burnishing System is available on our web site.

    Re: Kolner system questions

George is correct as to the chalk or gesso coating and depending on the final finish you are looking for you should apply 2 or 3 coats, sand each coat, using a finer sand paper each time, and the same goes for the Kolner. The better you build up the coats the smoother the final finish will be for applying you final guilding product i.e. gold, silver, copper leaf. Also, I think spraying would be fine, just try and keep the coats evenly sprayed and minimize runs (no runs is best). Hope this is helpful. Blessings, John
