    Style of Icons

    Greetings,

I am attracted to the byzantine style of icons. It seems to me that one can develop one's own personal style from that starting point. Are there other styles favored by modern iconography ? (Just wondering... haven't looked into the subject that much.)

    All of the best,

There are many styles of icons both ancient and modern. These styles can be divided into major regions of the Eastern Christian world (i.e., Russia, Greece, Crete, Copt [Egypt], Ethiopia, etc.) and then further subdivided into regional "schools", such as Novgorod School, Moscow School, etc. All of these styles are experiencing a revival and are simultaneously undergoing transformation as the artists are influenced by the various styles, schools and modern viewpoints. Our recommendation is to look at as many examples of icons as is possible and develop an understanding of how the styles have organically grown from the early medieval Byzantine style centered in Constantinople and later flourished in its many regional expressions.
