    Antiquing leaf

    Hi all,

I've been looking at a lot of painting frames that are antiqued. I'm wondering about what materials are traditionally used for this. Is it tinted shellac, tinted varnish, asphaltum, a combination of many? I have been oil gilding some of my small wooden sculptures (rsg, gesso, shellac, oil paint, size) but I might like to create some more depth or variety to the finishes instead of a strictly shiny gold object.
    Any specific recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Tony

    Tony,
Antiquing with gold leaf is typically done by distressing the gold; abrading the gold that has been laced over a red bole.
