Cadmium Yellow Dark Watercolor Paint | Rublev Colours

Cadmium Yellow Dark is made from cadmium zinc sulfide, an artificially prepared cadmium pigment containing cadmium and zinc sulfides. Cadmium pigments were first introduced in the early 19th century when chemists sought stable alternatives to vermilion and other less durable yellows and reds. Cadmium sulfide became commercially available in the 1840s and quickly supplanted older pigments due to its excellent lightfastness, high tinting power, and saturated hue. Deeper shades result from a higher proportion of cadmium sulfide, producing a warm, orange‑tinged yellow often called “deep” or “dark.”

In watercolors, cadmium yellow pigments disperse evenly and produce an opaque film. Cadmium Yellow Dark delivers rich, creamy strokes and blends cleanly with other colors without losing intensity. Its fine particle size yields moderate granulation, adding subtle texture to washes. Use this color for strong highlights, vivid mixes with reds and blues, and anywhere a deep, permanent yellow is desired. Because cadmium compounds can be hazardous if inhaled or ingested, avoid creating dust when handling dry pigment and keep paints out of reach of children.
