Rublev Colours Cassel Earth is imported from deposits in Germany.
Historically, Cassel earth was based on lignitic earth or earth containing as much as 60% brownish-black coal (an intermediate between peat and bituminous coal). Rublev Colours Cassel Earth is made from milled and purified umber. This particular umber chosen closely resembles the historical pigment in mass tone, opacity and tinting strength. Historical Cassel earth was a fugitive pigment (that is subject to fading in light). Rublev Artists Oils Cassel Earth, on the other hand, is lightfast.

Notes
Some separation of pigment and oil may occur in Rublev Colours Artist Oils and is a natural process when no wax or stabilizers are added to paint to prevent this from occurring.
