Tinuvin® 292 is a liquid hindered amine light stabilizer especially developed for coatings and varnishes. It significantly extends the life of varnishes and coatings by minimizing defects such as yellowing, cracking, and loss of gloss.

Tinuvin 292 is a tertiary amine developed for the UV stabilization of coatings and inks, making it an excellent general purpose hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS). Because of its liquid nature, it has the advantage of outstanding compatibility with various coating systems, including waterborne and UV curable coatings.

Tinuvin 292 is used in the amount of approx. 2–3% by weight of the resin. For best results, It should only be added at the time of use to small batches of varnish that can be used within a few days. Tinuvin 292 is for use within an environment absent ultraviolet light.

The dispersion of Tinuvin 292 in water may be accomplished by diluting with a water-miscible solvent such as butylcarbitol.

Compatibility

Possible interactions with Tinuvin 292 with other paint ingredients, such as acid catalysts, should be carefully evaluated. The active substance is a mixture of Bis(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl)-sebacate and 1-(Methyl)-8-(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinyl)-sebacate.

Applications

Tinuvin 292 may be used after adequate testing for applications such as:

• automotive coatings
• industrial topcoats
• coil coatings
• wood stains or do-it-yourself paints
• radiation curable coatings

Its high efficiency has been demonstrated in coatings based on a variety of binders such as:

• one- and two-component polyurethanes
• thermoplastic acrylics (physical drying)
• thermosetting acrylics, alkyds, and polyesters
• alkyd (air drying)
• waterborne acrylics
• phenolic, vinylic
• radiation curable acrylics

The weatherability of coatings can be significantly improved by the use of a combination of Tinuvin 292 and the UV absorber, such as Tinuvin® 1130, Tinuvin® 384, Tinuvin® 928, or Tinuvin® 400. These synergistic combinations give automotive coatings superior protection against gloss reduction, cracking, blistering, delamination, and color change. The light stabilizers may be added in two-coat automotive finishes to the clear coat and base coat. However, according to our experience, the optimum protection is achieved by adding light stabilizers to the topcoat.

Usage

Recommended concentrations of Tinuvin 292 (Hindered amine light stabilizer concentrations are based on binder solids):

Clear coatings and coatings with metallic pigments
0.5–1.0% Tinuvin 292
Solid and tint pigmented coatings
1.0–2.0% Tinuvin 292
