Chrome Yellow Primrose Watercolor Paint | Rublev Colours

Chrome Yellow Primrose is the pale shade of the historic chrome yellow pigment family. First synthesized in the early 19th century from the mineral crocoite, this pigment combines lead chromate with lead sulfate to produce a cooler, primrose tone. Lead chromate pigments were once celebrated for their brilliant colour and opacity, though the darker shades were prone to darkening and greenish shifts when exposed to air and sulfur compounds. To improve stability, manufacturers developed silica‑encapsulated versions of the pigment. Rublev Colours’ Chrome Yellow Primrose uses this refined pigment in a traditional gum arabic binder without fillers or modern additives, yielding an intense yellow with excellent hiding power. While the pigment is permanent in oil, it may exhibit some sensitivity in watercolour when exposed to strong light; care should be taken to protect work on paper from prolonged sunlight. Because the pigment contains lead compounds, it must be used with caution—avoid ingestion, inhalation of dust, and skin contact, and keep out of reach of children.
