The panel is a lightweight but rigid and durable copper composite material (CCM)—one strong sheet of copper and another sheet of aluminum bonded to a solid black polyethylene core. The aluminum side has a mill (metallic) finish, and the copper veneer is available in either a natural or abraded finish. Artefex Copper Artist Panels offer superior support for painting compared to wood panels because Copper Artist Panels have a very low response to environmental changes, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature.
How to Use
Oil paint can be applied directly to Artefex Copper Artist Panel without priming, although priming with lead oil, titanium oil, or alkyd ground is recommended. No surface preparation is required other than thoroughly cleaning the surface before painting or priming. We recommend cleaning the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl or denatured alcohol and allowing it to dry. Microfiber cloths are ideal for cleaning the surface. Avoid touching the copper surface with your hands, as the oils from the skin can interfere with the excellent adhesion of oil paint.
Do not use steel wool to rub the copper surface. Use sandpaper or micro-mesh sheets available from Natural Pigments.
If the copper has stains, these may be removed with Copper Stain Remover.

*Commercially pure copper is deoxidized with phosphorus to leave a relatively high content of this element. This alloy is not susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. The conductivity of this copper alloy is relatively low due to the high phosphorus content. The chemical composition of phosphorus-deoxidized, high residual phosphorus copper alloy (Cu-DHP) is a minimum of 99.85% copper (Cu) and 0.013 to 0.050% phosphorus (P). This alloy is classified as Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) C1220 and American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) C12200.
