You did not specify the medium you were using. Refractive index and particle size will not be much help to determine the opacity of a pigment when used in watercolor due to the larger delta (difference) between refractive indices of the pigment and air (which surrounds the pigment in dried watercolor). Your choices may be fine.

I probably won't use Velasquez medium with watercolor...but will do it with oil paint version. Is bone black the finest particle in watercolor darks? I am really looking for a very fine veil of shade. Thank you !

You can use either of those pigments, but you can easly take bone black and add Velázquez Medium to make it transparent.

I am trying to find the most transparent dark to use in thin washes for light- to mid-value grey glaze.  I don't see any info on particle size (I associate small size with transparency.)  I don't see any high refractive index darks. My current choices are Van Dyke Brown or Violet Hematite.  George, what do you recommend?  Thank you!!
