Gum Rosin (Staybelite A)
Staybelite A resin is gum rosin that has been partially hydrogenated. It is a pale, thermoplastic, acidic resin. Hydrogenation makes rosin highly resistant to oxidation and discoloration, and to changes in solubility, when exposed to air and heat.
Staybelite A resin is gum rosin that has been partially hydrogenated via a catalytic process. It is a pale, thermoplastic, acidic resin, and has similar characteristics to Staybelite hydrogenated wood rosin. Hydrogenation makes rosin highly resistant to oxidation and discoloration, and to changes in solubility, when exposed to air and heat. In these respects, Staybelite A is greatly superior to non-hydrogenated rosin. Metallic salts and other derivatives of Staybelite resin inherit this stability to a large degree. The softening point of Staybelite resin is slightly lower than that of non-hydrogenated rosin; otherwise, its solubility and compatibility characteristics are similar to rosin.
Benefits
Staybelite A is superior to gum rosin in that it has exceptionally pale color, is resistant to oxidation and discoloration, and has a wide solubility and compatibility range greater than ordinary non-hydrogenated rosin.
Applications
• Component in thermoplastic mixtures for polishing wax, sealing wax and encaustic wax.
• Used in the preparation of synthetic resins and metal resinates.
• Used in most applications where gum rosin is used.
