An extremely voluminous powder, hydrophilic silica thickens and increases transparency in waterborne and oil painting mediums. Learn more.
Fumed silica (also called pyrogenic silica) is a hydrophilic silica with a specific surface of 200 square meters per gram. Fumed silica has a chain-like particle structure that bonds to trap liquid, increasing viscosity. Add to thicken and increase the transparency of paint. Stirring or brushing paint containing fumed silica will cause it to flow, but it will thicken again when stopped. This property is called ‘‘thixotropy. “
