Isolating Varnish is a mixture of sandarac and mastic. Isolating Varnish dries fast to a clear finish. Ideal for isolating paint layers, as a fixative, and for reducing the absorbency of porous surfaces. (10% resin w/v)

Resin Concentration

Isolating Varnish has a resin concentration of 10% w/v. W/V means Weight/Volume. This measurement is commonly used when a solid is dissolved in a liquid. For example, 10% w/v means 100 grams of resin is present for every 1 liter of solvent. For Isolating Varnish, 10% w/v, 100 grams of sandarac, and mastic resins are present for every 1 liter of solvent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a natural varnish?

A natural varnish is a protective finish for wood or other materials made from naturally occurring substances such as plant resins, oils, and waxes. Unlike synthetic varnishes, natural varnishes do not contain synthetic resins, offering an eco-friendly alternative.

What are the various durable natural varnishes?

Durable natural varnishes include tung oil, linseed oil, shellac, mastic, and dammar varnish. These varnishes are known for their protective qualities, longevity, and ability to enhance the natural beauty of wood. They are often preferred for their environmental friendliness and lower health risks.

How do you make varnish at home?

To make a simple homemade varnish, mix equal parts of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. For a thicker consistency, add a small amount of beeswax. Heat the mixture gently until the beeswax melts and blends in. Allow it to cool before applying it to the wood surface.

Is varnish a natural resource?

Varnish can be a natural resource when made from materials like plant resins, natural oils, and waxes. However, many commercial varnishes are synthetic and contain artificial chemicals and solvents, which are not considered natural resources.

What is natural varnish made of?

Natural varnish is typically made from plant resins (e.g., amber, copal), natural oils (e.g., linseed, tung), and sometimes natural waxes. These ingredients are mixed and sometimes heated to create a protective coating for wood and other materials.

What plant is varnish made from?

Varnish can be made from several plants, most notably from the flax plant (for linseed oil) and the China wood tree (for tung oil). Resins used in varnishes can be sourced from plants like pine trees (pine resin), mastic tree Pistacia lentiscus (mastic resin), and trees in the Dipterocarpaceae family, principally those of the genera Shorea or Hopea (synonym Balanocarpus). (dammar resin).

What type of varnish is environmentally friendly?

Environmentally friendly varnishes include those made from natural oils and resins, such as tung oil, linseed oil, and shellac. These varnishes are biodegradable, non-toxic, and do not release harmful chemicals into the environment.
