Understand the Table Columns
These fields are selected because they are useful for filtering or comparing a broad range of natural, historical, and modern pigments.
A broad visual classification such as white, yellow, red, blue, green, brown, black, metallic, or pearlescent. It supports filtering but does not replace evaluation of mass tone, undertone, or mixtures.
Recommended applications such as oil, watercolor, gouache, egg tempera, fresco, encaustic, or acrylic. Suitability may depend on formulation, application conditions, and pigment-specific qualifications.
A broad category such as natural inorganic, synthetic inorganic, synthetic organic, carbon, metallic, effect pigment, extender, or mixed pigment.
The chemistry field provides a broad comparative family. The Colour Index Generic Name helps identify the general pigment category but does not guarantee identical appearance or handling among different products.
A typical value, range, or qualified distribution where available. Particle size can influence texture, granulation, sedimentation, dispersion, light scattering, and color development.
An approximate measure of resistance to scratching. It can help indicate abrasiveness during mulling or processing. Natural mineral mixtures may require a range rather than one exact value.
The amount of oil required to form a specified paste consistency, generally expressed as grams of oil per 100 grams of pigment. It is a comparative value, not an exact finished-paint formula.
The mass of pigment relative to material volume, generally expressed in grams per cubic centimeter. Density can affect settling and formulation calculations and should not be confused with loose bulk volume.
A primary optical property related to light refraction. The difference between pigment and binder refractive indices contributes to opacity, although particle size, dispersion, concentration, and film thickness also matter.
A concise handling summary and link to the SDS where available. The table summary does not replace the product label, SDS, exposure assessment, or application-specific precautions.

Use Technical Values Appropriately
Pigment data may come from supplier specifications, published references, historical sources, or measured results. Values should be interpreted with their source, test method, and material variability in mind.
Technical data help narrow a selection, but they cannot predict every formulation or studio condition. Prepare a representative test when the binder is unusual, the work is technically demanding, the pigment will be heated, or the environment is strongly alkaline, acidic, or exposed outdoors.

Names & Classification: Pigments are identified by common names and by Colour Index Generic Names and Constitution Numbers. The Colour Index is a standard reference maintained by textile and dye organisations that lists manufactured colour products under dual identifiers (generic names and constitution numbers). This system resolves conflicting historical or proprietary names and makes it easier to compare pigments across manufacturers and mediums.
Composition & Identification: At their core, pigments are chemical compounds that are insoluble and chemically unreactive in a paint medium. The table lists the chemical composition and synonyms for each pigment so you can see whether it is an organic or inorganic mineral and learn about its historical uses.
Lightfastness & Permanence: Lightfastness measures a pigment’s resistance to fading or colour change when exposed to light. Pigments with high lightfastness retain their original colour and brightness over time. The permanence rating takes into account exposure to light, moisture and other environmental factors; choosing high?lightfastness pigments is crucial for artworks intended to last.
Physical Properties: This column includes opacity, particle size and tinting strength. Fine pigments often offer improved hiding power but may trade off lightfastness, while coarser pigments can provide unique texture. A higher colour strength means less pigment is required to achieve a standard depth of shade.
Standard Depth: Standard depth of shade is an industry?wide benchmark for comparing tinting strength. The higher a pigment’s colour strength, the less pigment you need to reach a specific depth of colour. This indicator helps you gauge the pigment’s efficiency when mixing paints.
Safety & Handling: Some pigments contain heavy metals or other hazardous materials. Always wear a dust mask and gloves when working with dry pigments, keep work surfaces clean and avoid inhalation or ingestion. Natural Pigments recommends transferring dry pigments to sealed containers, labeling them clearly, and following all warning labels to minimise risk.
