Indigo
Indigo is both a dye and a pigment extracted from Indigofera tinctoria and related species, which have been cultivated in East Asia, Egypt, India, Bangladesh, and Peru since antiquity. The earliest direct evidence for the use of indigo dates to around 4000 BC and comes from Huaca Prieta in contemporary Peru. Pliny the Elder mentions India as the source of the dye, after which it was named. It was imported from there in small quantities via the Silk Road to Europe.

As with other copper pigments, avoid contaminating dust, and be cautious about mixing with sulfur-containing pigments or exposing finished work to sulfur fumes, which can darken copper greens over time.

Italian Brown Ocher Pigment
Italian Brown Ocher is a natural earth pigment in which hydrated iron oxide (primarily goethite) is the principal colorant, typically modified by associated clay minerals and minor oxides. Plumbonacrite Lead White Pigment
Plumbonacrite Lead White is a basic lead oxycarbonate pigment phase with the formula Pb5(CO3)3O(OH)2. It is compositionally distinct from ordinary basic lead carbonate, or hydrocerussite, which is the principal phase in traditional lead white. Plumbonacrite is a rare natural mineral and can also occur as a synthetic lead white phase. In artists’ materials and conservation literature, it is significant because it may indicate unusual manufacture, alkaline leaded media, limited carbon dioxide during formation, or alteration of lead-rich pigments such as red lead.

How to choose a pigment
All Rublev Colours® pigments are selected and prepared for professional use with an emphasis on permanence and consistent handling. When selecting a pigment, compare a few practical properties—especially if you work across different media.
- Lightfastness: resistance to fading in display conditions.
- Opacity / transparency: coverage, glazing behavior, and mixing strength.
- Texture: particle size and shape influence granulation and surface quality.
- Oil absorption: how much binder the pigment requires (affects stiffness and gloss).
- Safety & reactivity: follow dust-safe handling; check SDS and medium compatibility.
For side-by-side technical data, visit Pigment Specifications. If you’re making paint from dry pigment, start with safe handling and binder basics in the Pigment Guide.
