Acrylic-Primed Canvas
Acrylic-primed (sometimes called “universal priming”) Alcotpanels are available with cotton-polyester blend canvas with a plain weave in medium, fine and extra-fine textures. Universally-primed Artefex canvas panels are primed with acrylic binder, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide pigments.
Why BEVA 371 Adhesive?
BEVA 371 is an adhesive used in conservation to mount canvas and paper to rigid supports. BEVA 371 was developed by Gustav Berger, a renowned conservation researcher, after initiating a research program investigating lining adhesives for paintings. A series of formulations were developed, combining ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), waxes, and ketone resins. After subjecting the combinations to accelerated aging environments involving heat- and light aging, the best combination was selected—BEVA 371. Many studies have shown BEVA 371 to be an excellent adhesive. It adheres well, remains flexible, and is soluble in solvents that do not damage oil paint. One of the many advantages of BEVA 371 is that it does not cross-link over time and that, if used correctly, it can be easily removed from fragile artwork without staining or damage. In other words, the adhesive is reversible, so if the panel should become damaged, the canvas can be removed without damage to the painting.
