Dextrin is processed starch used as a binder in combination with (or in place of) gum arabic. It thickens paint, altering a taffy-like vehicle to a smooth, buttery consistency, and reduces surface gloss or bronzing in the dried color. Watercolors can be given a "short" or stiff consistency with dextrin.
