Details

Artefex Allinpanel™ is a professional panel with 100% linen canvas, oil- or acrylic-primed in Italy and adhered with BEVA 371 to a two-sided aluminum composite panel.

The panel is a lightweight but rigid and durable aluminum composite material (ACM)—two strong sheets of aluminum bonded to a solid polyethylene core. The panel is coated on one side with a white polyester finish and a mill (polished aluminum) finish on the other side. This panel is 3mm thick and is available in sizes from 8 x 10 to 20 x 24 inches. This weather-resistant panel is ideal for a wide range of paint mediums including these:

• Oil
• Oil-alkyd
• Oil-resin

Artefex Allinpanels offer a superior support for painting compared to wood panels because ACM panels have very low response to environmental changes, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature.

What are Aluminum Composite Panels?

Allinpanel is made using lightweight but rigid and durable aluminum composite material (ACM)—two strong sheets of aluminum bonded to a solid polyethylene core. The panel is coated on one side with a white polyester finish and a mill finish (polished aluminum) on the other side. The panel is 3mm thick (without the canvas) and is available in sizes from 8 x 10 to 20 x 24 inches. Weather-resistant Allinpanels are ideal for a wide range of paint mediums.

Artefex Allinpanels offer a superior support for painting compared to wood panels because ACM panels have very low response to environmental changes, such as relative humidity (RH) and temperature.

Oil-Primed 100% Linen Canvas

Oil-primed Allinpanels are available with 100% linen canvas with a plain weave in medium, fine and extra fine textures. Allinpanel canvas is primed with a pure linseed oil binder and titanium dioxide. This type of primer does not absorb water readily and is only suitable for oil, oil-resin and oil-alkyd paint. Oil priming requires a more complex process than acrylic (universal) priming and needs the utmost care and attention to produce a quality surface for painting. Two coats of animal collagen glue are first applied to the canvas, followed by two to five coats of oil priming (up to a total of seven coats) are applied. The canvas is then dried in low temperature ovens where the temperature and humidity are maintained at constant levels to achieve an optimal final result. The brightness and tone of oil colors are brought out by this special kind of preparation. The brushstroke is both fluent and well defined on this type of priming.

About the Pigments Used in Artefex Oil Primed Canvas: All major canvas manufacturers use zinc oxide in their oil priming because of the brightness and hardness it provides. The oil-primed canvas that we adhere to Artefex ACM panels are no exception and are made with titanium dioxide and a small amount of zinc oxide. In Artefex literature and website the primary pigment component of the oil priming, which is titanium dioxide, is identified, but in accordance with our policy of full disclosure, we also identify the minor pigmentary components of the oil priming: calcium carbonate and zinc oxide. It is an unfortunate situation in the industry that zinc oxide is universally used in the oil priming of commercially-prepared canvases, although it is known that zinc oxide causes embrittlement of oil paint film. However, artists materials manufacturers believe that small amounts of zinc oxide does not cause embrittlement and is not otherwise deleterious to oil paint film. This controversy will not be resolved any time soon since there are no studies to definitely show whether either side of the controversy is correct. In the meanwhile, we believe the safest precaution is to adhere canvas containing oil priming with zinc oxide to a rigid support, such as an ACM panel, which is not affected by changes in relative humidity where potential embrittlement would be a problem.

Why BEVA 371 Adhesive?

BEVA 371 is an adhesive used in conservation to mount canvas and paper to rigid supports. BEVA 371 was developed by Gustav Berger, a renowned conservation researcher, after initiating a research program investigating lining adhesives for paintings. A series of formulations were developed, composed of a combination of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), waxes and ketone resins. After subjecting the combinations to accelerated aging environments involving heat- and light-aging, the best combination was selected—BEVA 371. Many studies have shown BEVA 371 to be an excellent adhesive. It adheres well, remains flexible and is soluble to solvents that do not damage oil paint. One of the many advantages of BEVA 371 is that it does not cross-linking over time and that, if used properly, it can be easily removed from fragile artwork without staining or damage. In other words, the adhesive is reversible, so that if the panel should become damaged the canvas can be removed without damage to the painting.
