Kölner KGGG Sealer 123-A - Concentrated Water-Based Sealer for Gilding

Kölner KGGG Sealer 123-A is a concentrated water-based sealer designed to prepare porous surfaces before applying Kolner Burnishing Clay and Instaclay. Kölner KGGG Sealer 123-A also provides a protective coating over metal leaf, such as silver or composition leaf. You will need Kölner KGGG Colnasol tablet and a Kölner KGGG Base to achieve successful results.

Application

1. Dilute Kölner Sealer 123-A with tap water in a ratio of 1 : 3  to 1 : 5. The ratio depends on the substrate's absorbency.

2. Apply the thinned solution with a soft brush or sprayer.

3. The amount of application depends on the porosity of the surface. In the case of extreme porosity (like plaster or some softwoods), a wet-on-wet application is recommended.

4. If a glossy film is visible after drying, the solution applied is not sufficiently diluted, or the number of layers applied is too much.

5. After drying, the final appearance should be a satin sheen; otherwise, adhesion problems or cracking of the primer layers may result.

6. Allow the sealer to dry thoroughly before applying additional layers of Burnishing Clay or Instaclay.

7. The drying time is approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Additional Applications

Kölner Sealer 123-A can be used as a protective coat over metal leaf that tends to oxidize, such as silver or composition gold leaf. Because Kölner Sealer 123-A films are not absolutely water resistant, this product is designed for interior use only. Kölner Sealer 123-A should be thinned with 20% to 50% tap water. To avoid too many air bubbles, apply the sealer with a brush moistened with water and apply the solution slowly in one direction. A single layer of application is sufficient.

A colored varnish or overcoat serving as a glaze can be made from Kölner Sealer 123-A. Add 10% water and a dye dissolved in pure alcohol. A wood stain may serve as a dye. Up to 25% of the wood stain or dye alcohol solution should be added to the Kölner Sealer 123-A concentrate.
