Kölner Sealer P - Burnishing Clay Primer-Sealer for Gilding

Kölner Sealer P is a water-based sealer that is part of the KGGG system's three-part process, which includes burnishing clay (Fond) and one of two water-based adhesives. The KGGG system replaces the time-consuming traditional gesso or chalk grounds and bole water gilding system while providing a beautiful and bright gold finish.

Kölner Sealer P is the first step in the KGGG process before applying burnishing clay (Fond) and either Colnasol or Colnafix adhesive. It reduces the absorbency and improves adhesion for primers and KGGG Fond Burnishing Clay on substrates such as stucco, plaster, and paper. Kölner Sealer P improves adhesion between the substrate and subsequent primer layers to ensure better adhesion for KGGG Fond Burnishing Clay.

Kölner Sealer P is a water-based, acrylic resin dispersion. The solvent additive is less than one percent. It is freeze-resistant and Insoluble in water after film formation. The advantages of Kölner Sealer P over Sealer 123-A are improved adhesion of Kölner KGGG Fond Burnishing Clay and better holdout on highly absorbent surfaces such as plaster.

Kölner Sealer P can also be used as a colorless varnish (overcoat) over imitation gold leaf and silver leaf to protect it against atmospheric corrosion. Apply Kölner Sealer P undiluted in one or two coats. Kölner Sealer P is waterproof but may temporarily whiten when in contact with water.

Sealer 123a is diluted with water before use to reduce the substrates' absorbency and ensure adhesion for KGGG Fond Burnishing Clay, which is used for gilding on plaster, stone, and wood.

Directions

Surface Preparation

Surfaces to be gilded must be dry and free from dust and grease. It is best to sand the surface to make it as smooth as possible. Apply Kölner Sealer P to create a smooth surface for the burnishing clay (Fond).

Application

Usually, one coat is sufficient to seal the surface. However, you may need to apply several coats of Kölner Sealer P to fill in and seal larger cracks or crevices. Each coat should be allowed to dry completely (about one hour) and then lightly sanded before adding the next layer. The last coat should also be sanded, but not to the point where it is glossy. The Kölner KGGG System Fond (burnishing clay) requires a slightly scuffed surface to adhere properly.

Cleanup

Clean brushes and tools with soap and warm water. Discard any unused solutions; do not return them to the container. After Kölner Sealer P forms a film, it can only be cleaned and removed with acetone or ethyl acetate. 

Storage

Keep the container tightly closed and avoid cold temperatures or excessive heat. Kölner Sealer P has a shelf life of up to 2 years.
